About This Course

The Careers Leader role is an exciting middle-senior leadership position, with the potential to impact the lives of every student in a school or college. It is a complex role that requires training to develop specialist careers knowledge as well as skills in leadership, management, coordination and networking.

The Careers & Enterprise Company has developed this 2–4-hour online course in partnership with Teach First as an introduction to careers leadership in schools and colleges. It provides an introduction to the essential knowledge and skills a Careers Leader requires to plan to improve career guidance in their school or college, deliver against the Gatsby Benchmarks, and fulfil the core requirements of their role. Learners may choose to advance to face-to-face training on completion of this course.

This course will also set you up to begin to create a careers programme with clearly defined career learning outcomes and outputs supported by a strategic careers plan. A strategic plan will support Careers Leaders in delivering the outcomes of the careers programme and will ensure that careers is embedded in the strategic priorities of the school/college. The benchmarks can then be used to self-assess overall provision.

The course comprises 10 modules. modules 1–8 focus on the eight Gatsby Benchmarks, and the final two modules enable Careers Leaders to build on this knowledge to plan their careers programme and strategic career plan, as well as their own personal development.

We have included videos throughout the course where three Careers Leaders from different settings will speak about key topics and give you top tips for how to deliver certain aspects of the Gatsby Benchmarks in your school or college:
